WBO strips Mairis Briedis of cruiserweight world title

The WBO ordered an immediate rematch, which means Briedis would have to fight Krzysztof Glowacki before competing in the final of the World Boxing Super Series in what was supposed to be a title unification bout against Yunier Dorticos on Dec. 14. Mairis Briedis, who is contractually bound to the tournament, will not comply with the WBO's order to fight Glowacki again, so therefore stripped of his title. Glowacki of Poland will be ordered to fight for the vacant WBO world title against the organization's leading available contender.

WBO orders rematch between Mairis Briedis and Krzysztof Glowacki

The WBO has ordered an immediate rematch between cruiserweight world titlist Mairis Briedis and former titleholder Krzysztof Glowacki after a lengthy appeals process brought by Glowacki in July following his controversial third-round knockout loss to Briedis on June 15 in the semifinals of the World Boxing Super Series. With the rematch ordered, it leaves in limbo the status of the World Boxing Super Series tournament final, which was supposed to be a title unification bout between Briedis and Yunier Dorticos. That fight was originally penciled in for Dec.14 but never formally announced while tournament organizers awaited the outcome of Glowacki's appeal. Briedis and Dorticos could go through with the final as planned but with only Dorticos' 200-pound world title at stake rather than it being a unification bout because part of the WBO's ruling said if Briedis does not fight Glowacki next he will be stripped of the title.

Mairis Briedis stops Krzysztof Glowacki in bizarre,
controversial World Boxing Super Series semifinal

June 15 2019: Riga, Latvia
In a World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight semi-final, Mairis Briedis dethroned WBO world champion Krzysztof Glowacki by thrilling third round KO at the Riga
Arena in Riga, Latvia. Briedis put Glowacki on the deck with an elbow and was deducted a point. Glowacki who was still badly hurt went down again this time by a
punch. They kept fighting after the bell and Briedis knocked down Glowacki once again. Referee Robert Byrd failed to hear the ring of the bell to end the round.
Both came out firing in round three and Briedis floored Glowacki a third time to end it. Time was 27 seconds of round three.
